Personal Growth

Description of Course

The LifeLine Personal Growth Course (PG) is the flagship training of LifeLine internationally. It was originally designed to assist participants develop deeper self awareness and understanding, as a forerunner to basic counselling training, on the premise that individuals who wish to help others at an emotional level, should first be able to help themselves. This module has its roots in the curriculum first developed by LifeLine International (Maslow, Johari’s Window, Berne’s Transactional Analysis), but has grown ecologically, responding to the needs as expressed by Namibian participants, and includes new thinking and trends as they have emerged in Psychology, such as Emotional Intelligence (Goleman) and aspects of Positive Psychology (Seligman). It has also been adapted to the Namibian cultural climate and local conditions. Due to demand, we are increasingly offering this course as a stand-alone module for any individual wishing to engage in a process of personal growth and development.

Trainees are encouraged to look very closely and critically at their own personal identity as well as changes, if any, which are desired to reach more fulfilment. They are also encouraged to identify and celebrate their own qualities as a human being. Our facilitators work sensitively to build trust in the workshop to enable participants to feel comfortable expressing their own thoughts, ideas, feelings and fears about the topics under discussion. Everything happens through experiential learning, where an environment is created that facilitates attitude and behavioural change as past learning is evaluated by group members. Typically, a topic is introduced by the facilitator and then exercises are given or discussion questions introduced which are carried out in small “closed” groups where confidentiality is stressed as a key issue. Each topic or exercise is then further discussed and concluded in the larger workshop.

LifeLine facilitators are trained to work with group processes and to look for the particular concerns that might emerge from each group. They welcome, and work flexibly with the needs of each group. Individual counselling is available for those participants who would benefit from it during the course of the workshop. Although progression to the second stage of training is by invitation only, one of the additional values of the PG Course is that some people identify that the time is not right for them to proceed as a counsellor, and they opt out at the end of stage one.

Those who attended the course have found it very beneficial – in building self esteem, increasing emotional intelligence, learning to resolve conflict and on developing and deepening relationships – at home and at work. Partner organisations of LifeLine use Personal Growth as a required course for the induction of all new staff. Other organisations have chosen to do this module as a team, not only benefitting from the personal growth of individuals, but also in team development. In the words of one of our community counsellors, “Imagine how wonderful it would be if everyone in Namibia could do the Personal Growth Course. It has changed my life.”
